Caregiving

It is so important as a caregiver not to become so enmeshed in the role that you forget yourself. It's neither good for you nor your loved one.

Hearing Loss and Adventures in Caregiving: Free Hearing Test From Miracle Ear

Hi everyone! I know it's been a little while since I've checked in. Sorry, with work and family obligations, it's been crazy. But, I wanted to take a moment to talk about my partnership with Miracle Ear.

As you all know, I'm a caregiver to my lovely mother (a.k.a "The Old Lady"). My mother is legally blind, so that's really put a lot of pressure on her other senses to compensate for her lack of vision. Luckily, we haven't had too many issues. But, it's now become super important for me to protect and monitor her hearing.

It's amazing how we take our hearing for granted. I don't think my mother has ever had a hearing test. I think my father just compensated for what she didn't see or hear. That's a lot of pressure to place on him too. Especially, since elderly caregivers often are taking care of their needs either. That combination is a potential disaster waiting to happen. But, now that she's with us; that's all about to change.

I'm so thankful that Miracle Ear has launched the Hear a Better Day campaign. This campaign is about sharing the benefit of hearing aids in general. Hearing aids enhance the lives of not only those with hearing loss, but their loved ones as well. Miracle Ear is committed to ensuring that everyone gets an opportunity to savor every moment of life. Hearing gives you a sense of control over your life that is very hard to replace. It also helps reassure your family, that you're capable of taking care of yourself. Independence benefits everyone.

My mom loves to listen to audiobooks and television during the day. It keeps her mind stimulated and focused. That's so important as she ages, and it makes her happy. When she's happy, we're all happy. I couldn't imagine what her life would be like without her hearing. So, I definitely will be making a point of getting her hearing tested. I know it's not easy to have those tough conversations sometimes. But, Miracle Ear thankfully thought about that too. They also have resources for helping a loved one . They've thought of everything smile.

So, don't wait! Go and take your loved one for a free hearing test at Miracle Ear.  They have the latest in hearing technology, and make it their mission to ensure you feel comfortable and taken care of of completely. Here's some information on their newest device, the Genius 2.0 with speech isolation.  Listening is about to get easier.

GENIUS 2.0 builds on the superior audibility and key features introduced with GENIUS, but takes this brand new cutting-edge technology to the next level!

Unique GENIUS 2.0 Features
Music Master is designed to enrich the quality of music and provide maximum enjoyment for listening to music. With three music settings – Concert, Playback and Performer – wearers will enjoy a variety of music. GENIUS 2.0 is designed to deliver excellent music fidelity whether listening to music or performing.
Echo Guard stops sound from reflecting off of surfaces such as ceilings and walls in reverberant environments. GENIUS 2.0 Echo Guard provides a comfortable setting for wearers by softening the reflected sound for better sound quality. Wearers no longer need to avoid difficult-to-hear places where sounds bounce off of the walls.
Phone Surround transmits the phone signal from one ear to both ears when using a handheld phone. The signal is automatically detected by a magnet and wirelessly sends the signal, surrounding the wearer, and provides better understanding without the need for an additional accessory. GENIUS 2.0 provides an improved listening experience for telephone calls.

Say Hello to Wireless CROS Solution
The wireless CROS/BiCROS solution is designed for those with unilateral hearing loss. Available in our most popular style, the CROS RIC transmitter is worn on the unaidable ear and wirelessly sends the signal to any GENIUS 2.0 wireless hearing aid on the other ear, allowing the wearer to hear sounds from both sides.

We hope you are as excited about this new technology as we are! You can learn more about our GENIUS 2.0 technology, schedule an appointment to speak with a Miracle-Ear hearing instrument specialist.

Summer Treats and Tips for Staying Hydrated For Individuals with Swallowing Disorders

Hi everyone! We know it's been a long and hot summer. So, we were super excited to have the opportunity to share some great tips for keeping loved ones with swallowing disorders hydrated. As caregivers, it's so challenging to come up with fun treats that meet the nutritional needs of our loved ones. Our mom is diabetic, so maintaing her blood sugar levels are super important.

We're so grateful for speech language pathologist, Jennifer Baquet, MA, CCC-SLP,  sharing and demonstrating  creative and delicious recipes to stay hydrated.  Jennifer Baquet, MA, CCC-SLP, is a senior clinician with Language Fundamentals, which provides services at the Amsterdam Nursing Home in New York City.  She was part of a team at Amsterdam that helped develop and implement an innovative dining service program for those with dysphagia. They created new and popular drink flavors like kiwi strawberry, and even were able to serve broths or a resident’s own favorite tea. You can find more information and recipes at http://thickit.com

It's great to see everyone taking a pro-active approach to making nutrition healthy and fun. Here's the video. Enjoy, and let us know of any other great recipes you have for making healthy yummy treats!

Until next time!

Roadtripping With The Divas: Sanibel Island & The Island Inn, Pt. 1

Hello everyone!

It’s been a CRAZY week (More on that later). But, the "divas" managed to squeeze in a quick road trip to Sanibel Island laughing. Yes, we’ve kicked off our summer road trip through Florida series with Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island is a part of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Florida Metropolitan area; and a popular stop for many due to its beautiful shell beaches and wildlife refuges. There is so much to see and do in Sanibel; it’s a beautiful way to really get that “Old Florida Experience”. The speed limit is 35 mph, bikers and pedestrians rule the road, and you can even get your groceries delivered to you. Sanibel Island has something for everyone.
