Birthday Shenanigans & Road Tripping With The Divas

It’s been a crazy social April for us. The “travel bug” has bitten me, and I’m determined to make the most of it. Travel can be so challenging when you’re a caregiver. There’s so much planning that has to go into putting a trip together.

It’s a great chance to recharge, and you’ll be surprised how it can make everyone in your household happy. It was the perfect dose of “happiness” for my mom’s birthday.

                                                           Let's Do This!

My mom turned sixty-nine earlier this month, so we decided it would be great if she could have some time with our Godmother and her best friend, Sheila in Ft. Lauderdale. We really had to cut back our traveling last year to keep the budget inline. But, this year we’ve realized that with a little planning & budget we can make it happen. So, off we went to Ft. Lauderdale.

We’re really lucky that we’re only three hours from Ft. Lauderdale. It’s just enough time to keep anyone from getting too antsy. If you’re located in an area with some great spots within driving distance, take advantage of them. It’s so much easier to travel by car with my mom. The backseat belongs to her. She has her blanket and snacks; it’s the perfect mode of transportation for her.

I normally don’t stop on the road. I’m notorious for getting to Ft. Lauderdale in less than three hours too smile. But, this time I decided let’s make this a trip about taking our time. So, we made a pit stop in Boca Raton for lunch at Shake Shack. We have two here in Orlando, but we’ve never made our way there. So, this was an awesome treat. Nothing makes people happier than hamburgers and milkshakes. It was so good. Plus, it was a great chance to stretch our legs. So, find a place you’ve never tried before and go. The purpose of the trip is to have fun. So, pack in as many fun moments as possible.

After lunch we headed into Fort Lauderdale, the weather was simply amazing. It was the perfect mix of sunshine and ocean breeze. I was so happy to be home. Since we no longer have a house in Ft. Lauderdale, we stay in a hotel during our trips. So, we typically stay at the Renaissance. It’s the perfect location to our godmother, food, and the highway. Plus, they have rooms setup for people with disabilities.

Shower with Bench

Great space and easy to navigate

Since my mom is blind, it’s so important for us to have a room that she can easily navigate.  It had the most wonderful bench in the shower that really made it easy for Mom to shower safely. Plus, with all of the open space it was easy for her to get around. Look for hotels that offer handicapped accessible rooms, and ask about the different options available. Peace of mind is key for a great vacation.

Plus, it makes it easier for you to feel comfortable to slip away downstairs for a coffee or cocktail laughing . Remember, this is a vacation.

We had a great time with our godmother and god family. It’s so awesome to have “family” that supports you in every sense of the word. They’ve even convinced me to let me “mom” stay with them while my sister and I take an adventure alone. They really want to make sure that we’re living our lives to the fullest. We’re so blessed. I know that not everyone has that kind of support, so we’re going to take it. We’ll keep you posted on where & when that adventure will be.

But, for now it’s all about “Mom”. Moments like this make it all worth it.
