What's up everybody? I hope your week is starting off good. My Monday has been crazy. I almost had a flashback to my last "Tuesday that felt like a Monday". You know that one after Labor Day. All I can say, is "Le Struggle . But, I've decided to focus this week thinking about happy thoughts. So, I have to tell you about my magical weekend with my sister.
Tracey always works on Saturday, and she's normally tired when she comes home. But, this week we decided we needed to have a "night out", and we went to Seasons 52 for Magical Dining. Magical Dining is this amazing time of the year ( August 29th- October 2nd), where restaurants put together an amazing three-course prix menu for $33. One dollar from every meal served goes to a charity. This year the proceeds are going to The Russell Home for Atypical Children. So, you get a great meal while supporting an amazing cause. Tracey and I really look forward to Magical Dining. As caregivers, we have to "ball on a budget". So, we really appreciate every opportunity we can find to have fun affordably. Interested yet? Well check out the food .
Hi everyone! I know it's been a little while since I've checked in. Sorry, with work and family obligations, it's been crazy. But, I wanted to take a moment to talk about my partnership with Miracle Ear.
As you all know, I'm a caregiver to my lovely mother (a.k.a "The Old Lady"). My mother is legally blind, so that's really put a lot of pressure on her other senses to compensate for her lack of vision. Luckily, we haven't had too many issues. But, it's now become super important for me to protect and monitor her hearing.
It's amazing how we take our hearing for granted. I don't think my mother has ever had a hearing test. I think my father just compensated for what she didn't see or hear. That's a lot of pressure to place on him too. Especially, since elderly caregivers often are taking care of their needs either. That combination is a potential disaster waiting to happen. But, now that she's with us; that's all about to change.
I'm so thankful that Miracle Ear has launched the Hear a Better Day campaign. This campaign is about sharing the benefit of hearing aids in general. Hearing aids enhance the lives of not only those with hearing loss, but their loved ones as well. Miracle Ear is committed to ensuring that everyone gets an opportunity to savor every moment of life. Hearing gives you a sense of control over your life that is very hard to replace. It also helps reassure your family, that you're capable of taking care of yourself. Independence benefits everyone.
My mom loves to listen to audiobooks and television during the day. It keeps her mind stimulated and focused. That's so important as she ages, and it makes her happy. When she's happy, we're all happy. I couldn't imagine what her life would be like without her hearing. So, I definitely will be making a point of getting her hearing tested. I know it's not easy to have those tough conversations sometimes. But, Miracle Ear thankfully thought about that too. They also have resources for helping a loved one . They've thought of everything .
So, don't wait! Go and take your loved one for a free hearing test at Miracle Ear. They have the latest in hearing technology, and make it their mission to ensure you feel comfortable and taken care of of completely. Here's some information on their newest device, the Genius 2.0 with speech isolation. Listening is about to get easier.

Hi everyone! We know it's been a long and hot summer. So, we were super excited to have the opportunity to share some great tips for keeping loved ones with swallowing disorders hydrated. As caregivers, it's so challenging to come up with fun treats that meet the nutritional needs of our loved ones. Our mom is diabetic, so maintaing her blood sugar levels are super important.
We're so grateful for speech language pathologist, Jennifer Baquet, MA, CCC-SLP, sharing and demonstrating creative and delicious recipes to stay hydrated.Jennifer Baquet, MA, CCC-SLP, is a senior clinician with Language Fundamentals, which provides services at the Amsterdam Nursing Home in New York City. She was part of a team at Amsterdam that helped develop and implement an innovative dining service program for those with dysphagia. They created new and popular drink flavors like kiwi strawberry, and even were able to serve broths or a resident’s own favorite tea. You can find more information and recipes at http://thickit.com.
It's great to see everyone taking a pro-active approach to making nutrition healthy and fun. Here's the video. Enjoy, and let us know of any other great recipes you have for making healthy yummy treats!
Pt. 2: Roadtripping With The Divas in Sanibel Island
We’re back! Are you ready for Pt. 2 of our “Road tripping with the Divas: Sanibel Island” adventure? If you need a quick reminder of Pt. 1, please click here. I can’t say enough wonderful things about our fab host resort, Island Inn . Island Inn and Hillgate Marketing sponsored this trip, but all opinions are my own. So, with that out of the way, let’s talk about our Island Tour and Sea Life Excursion with Captain Bubby’s Island Tours and Adventures in Paradise.
Our second day in Sanibel Island started off with a personal tour with Captain Bubby’s Island Tour. Captain Bubby’s Island Tours is a concierge service that specializes in customized, educational, unique experiences that target exploring the beaches of Fort Myers, Sanibel, Captiva and all of Lee County, Florida. They pride themselves on providing experiences that are tailored to your interests. They love to provide guests access to areas that are off the beaten path to provide the most memorable experience possible. They definitely exceeded that and more with us .
Are you taking care of "You?" Have you ever asked yourself that question? I know I didn't. But, I've started thinking about it more and more. Especially, since I became a caregiver to my mom.
I always say my life changed in the matter of three hours on December 20, 2010. That's the day my father died, and my mom came to live with my sister and I. I went immediately into super saver caregiver mode, and I've never looked back. The next five years would go on to be filled with cursing, crying, depression, stress, laughter, hope, and love. That's quite a cycle isn't it? But, that's a caregiver life. We give so much of ourselves to others; that you sometimes forget about the most important person in this, you.
